Darren’s story

Case Studies: Darren’s story

Position: Multi Utility Apprenticeship
Location: Uddingston, Scotland

I now understand how the utility networks get to the consumer, and it’s rewarding being part of that process.

22-year-old Darren Johnstone was previously working on a Gas Plant as a Maintenance Assistant when his partner, who works at Energetics’ head office in Hamilton, told him about the Multi Utility Apprenticeship vacancy. Darren says:

“Although I had a bit of experience in a Gas environment, I felt the Multi Utility Apprenticeship would be a good career choice for me.”

The mix of classroom and onsite learning has proved a contributing factor to Darren enjoying the MU Apprenticeship, highlighting the fact that every day provides a new challenge and opportunity to learn new skills and knowledge.

Darren has been working well with two other MU Apprentices, Steven Breslin and Brian Warnock, travelling to Manchester together every 6 weeks for their classroom based learning, as well as occasionally crossing paths on site such as the large Woodilee Village new homes development, putting their theoretical knowledge in to practice. Darren comments:

marksThe skills and knowledge I have gained are extremely useful, and knowing that I have lots more training and skills to learn over the next two years, I have a lot to look forward to.”

Darren concludes: “As the first Energetics Apprentices, it was a new journey for myself and for the company, however the overall experience has been very good. I now understand how the different utilities get to the consumer and it feels good to know how I play a key part in laying the mains and connecting the services.”
